Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy to hit market early

Will bring its popular Summer Shandy brand out of hibernation early this year.

Typically not on shelves until late March, Chippewa Falls-based Leinenkugel, which operates a brewery near downtown Milwaukee, will roll out the seasonal brew on Feb. 29. The brew features malted wheat and barley, lemonade flavor and Wisconsin honey. It will be available nationwide in cans, bottles and on draft.

Summer Shandy, the which is touted as the first shandy-style brew in the United States, experienced an 80 percent growth in sales in 2011, according to Leinenkugel management. “Shandy” is short for shandygaff, as it’s called in England and Germany. Shandygraff is typically a mixture of beer and soda or lemonade.
